Lake Bled to Ljubljana via Lake Bohinj Slovenia
Day 10
Leaving our lovely little campsite, we thought we’d try another lake – Bohinj where there is only one campsite. This one was only an hour’s drive away and Gareth had read good reviews about it. Well, what do they say about reviews? Yep, you can’t rely on them.
Firstly, it was in the middle of nowhere, secondly, the campsite was closed
. Oh well, you win some and lose some.!
The lake does look spectacular though, last night’s waiter said you can drink the water it’s so pure and looking at it we could believe him. It was so clear, so more a pity that we didn’t get to stop by it. This lake has a road between it and the footpath so not as pleasant as Bled. And, this is the only campsite anywhere near walking distance of the lake.
Plans were adjusted and we headed for our next stop, the capital city of Slovenia, Ljubljana. We are parked at the end of a supermarket car park where 5 spaces are allocated to motorhomes with electric hookup. As you can guess all spaces are full.
It’s about a 30 minute walk to the old town and not an unpleasant walk either. The only problem we have is the freezing cold wind. Our waiter last night said that it is unusual to still have snow on the mountains in April so business will be slow to pick up. We have been wearing 4 layers, not unusual for me but very unusual for Gareth.
Walking around the city, when the sun was shining it was very warm but when you get to a crossroads, you hit a wind tunnel and
. Haha, roll on the warmer weather.
Apparently Ljubljana is one of the smallest capital cities in Europe and a 6th of the population are students. It was evident as the city centre is vibrant and buzzing. It is very clean and we noticed bronze statues almost everywhere. The beautiful buildings are well kept and there are ample bars and restaurants for a rest stop. We saw the biggest market Square I have ever seen. It’s actually what they call Parliament Square and sits below the imposing castle.
You don’t have to climb to this one, they have a funicular railway to get you to the top
. The river Ljubljanica runs through the city and there are a variety of bridges crossing the greeny/turquoise water. One had dragons on it and another with thousands of lovers locks ( like the one in Paris). What was interesting was the bronze castings of dragons heads also had locks on them. Sadly we couldn’t see a space for us to put one on for ourselves
.
We saw the most unusual door on St Nicholas’s Church, (see pics), it could be a bit daunting passing through it.
We can see that it would be very popular in the warmer weather and a very charming place to visit.
Ljubljana is a contrast of brutal communist architecture on the outside mixed with modern buildings, softened by the loveliness of the old town. All the main attractions are close together too. We really liked it ![]()
