Day 16

Krka National Park, Croatia

This morning, Easter Monday, we decided to go to some waterfalls Paula brought to our attention in one of her comments.

The waterfalls are in the Krka National Park, which was about an hour’s drive from Zadar.

There are many waterfalls along the river Krka, and to see them all you either hike for 4 hours (one way), take a boat excursion (which is approx 4 hours) or drive round to each of the car parks at each entrance point. We chose the Lozovac entrance because there was a chance we could park there overnight if we needed to.

This is the entrance to see the Skradinski Buk waterfalls, which are a collection of 17 waterfalls and are an incredible sight to see.

There apparently is a hike trail down to the waterfalls, though quite treacherous by reviews that we have read, but we opted for the bus. As it turns out the hike trail was closed today. We also were nicely surprised to hear that there was no entrance fee for visitors before 1pm and no charge for the bus ride either.

This is because on Easter Monday, since 1996, a service is held in the park at The Church of St Nicholas and visitors are all treated as pilgrims. We did see a lot of Nun’s and priests and now we know why!

The walk was amazing, noisy from the water cascading over the rocks, crowded with visitors walking on unbarriered boardwalks, and the most beautiful views we have seen in a while.

Near the end of the boardwalk we sat with our legs dangling over the edge and just soaked it all up. Swimming has recently been banned in the park to preserve its beauty. I must admit, the water was so clear it was very tempting to at least dip a toe in.

As you can imagine, the queues for the transfer buses were quite a wait, but once back to the van we realised we still had loads of daylight left so headed to our overnight stop in Trogir – more about Trogir tomorrow after we have visited
