Day 31

Lefkes into the Peloponnese to Pinios, Greece

We had such a lovely sleep last night, we weren’t sure we wanted to leave this little place. As we have a couple of deadlines to meet in Greece we thought we’d just move further down the coast.

The route took us along the coast and towards Patras (though the view wasn’t so splendid today as there was a haze over the land and sea) and then headed inland on a very smooth toll road. We stopped for a drink in a posh service area and had the first Frappé of our trip . Getting to Patras means crossing the water and there appears to be a choice of crossings, either a lovely looking bridge or a ferry. We took the bridge which cost us €21, not sure how much the little ferries were.

Patras is a big place and according to wikipedia.

It’s Greece’s 3rd biggest and the Peloponnese capital. Thankfully we could drive round it and then found ourselves on the strangest of roads. It appeared to be quite new, with junctions about every 2 miles! To prevent drivers crossing lanes they have installed red cones. I’m not kidding, it was one of the longest coned roads we had been on, and that’s saying something coming from the UK!

A major part of the land alongside this road is used for strawberry growing, and every now and again there are packing plants. Sadly, none were being sold on the side of the road due to the lack of pull-in areas.

Finally we turned off and headed towards today’s stop. It’s a lovely campsite (Camping Ionion Beach) on the beach, in the middle of nowhere. But that doesn’t matter as it has everything you need. Very nice showers and toilets, laundry, restaurant and supermarket, oh yes, AND a pool with water in only the 2nd one of this trip. It looks lovely too so may dip my toe in tomorrow .

The beach is lovely but sadly no dogs on this part. It’s not a problem as a short walk along the beach brings you to the public beach and dogs are allowed, even big, massive hole digging dogs like Meg! We’ve had to buy a kiddies sand rake to fill them back in again after she’s got bored.

We must be near an air force base as we have had jets doing manoeuvres overhead all day!

Had a lovely salad for tea followed by a gorgeous shower and now sat relaxing outside of the van listening to the waves…..again .
