Piran

Monday & Tuesday 28th & 29th April.

Muggia, Italy to Piran, Slovenia

Monday

It was a hot night in the van. As we were in a car park, we couldn’t open the side windows, so just had all 3 skylights open with the shade pulled partially across to block the early morning light.

Meg had a walk along the beach before we set off for Slovenia. We had seen a place called Piran that we wanted to visit.

Slovenia doesnt have many places where you can just stop for the night, especially on this coast so we opted for a campsite.

It’s a little confusing where we parked in Fesia – a 15min walk into Piran – there is a. ASCI campsite which is full to bursting with longterm mobile homes. To cater for the mobile campers they provide a grassed parking area just opposite. No services on the actual pitches but you can use all of the campsite facilities.

Next door to this area (which is beachside) is another camper carpark. Its cheaper than the campsite, but the pitches are really narrow and you cant get anything like chairs etc out.

In actual fact, where we are is just flipping perfect. Camp Fesia

A two minute walk through a grassed area with lots of sport activities for young and old, leads you to the water’s edge. The pebble beach is narrow and all but disappears with the tide. There’s a paved walkway which will lead you along the coast into Piran, a very pretty town on a promontory.

We arrived just in time to grab a space and then went to explore. Not being able to resist a drink in the sun facing the Adriatic, with italy across the way, we sat at the beach bar. The smells from the food being served made us hungry so we promised ourselves to eat here before we leave.

The walk into Piran was very pleasant, almost all of it on level ground. You come off of the coast path and into the town at the Cathedral with a lovely clock tower you can climb. It was just a little too hot for us this time.

Walking down the lovely little cobbled lanes we eventually came out into the square, very bright and white. Not wanting to stop just yet, we turned up some more lanes, enjoying the cool shade.

Some of the buildings here are very well kept and some are a little rugged, but not scruffy. The rough peeling walls seem to add to Piran’s beauty strangely, making it feel more authentic almost.

We stumbled upon a lovely little raised square housing two of the town’s old water wells. Feeling a little hungry by now, we stopped for a light lunch. We had 2 traditiinal plates, one a platter of local meets and cheeses, and the other was sardines in oil. I can’t remember what else they were prepared in but they were very tasty.

This was washed down with a Radler- we were excited to see it on the menu, and when it came it was beer and grapefruit rather than lemon. I have seen these on sale before in Montenegro so we were pleased to get the chance to try it.

It certainly did what Radlers are great for, refreshing, cold, not too sweet and only 2.5° abv. Perfect for a hot afternoon.

Continuing our walk we came out onto the harbour wall. Its very pretty, a lighthouse at one end and the marina at the other. The road is lined with really attractive properties, not too big and not many modern ones.

This led us back into the main square, busy with families and visitors alike, children practicing roller skating and skateboarding. Everyone was cheery and the bars and restaurants were busy.

Of course we had to stop to soak it all up, ordering a drink and then an icecream each before heading back to the van.

At sunset we popped down to the waters edge to watch the glorious colours appear and then devoured a packet mix Thai Red Curry and rice. Yummy.

Tuesday

It was an absolute luxury to have all of our windows open last night, first time we’ve needed to in this new van.

Today was all about doing nothing. Meg had a walk on the beach, I’ve done a little bit of washing using my new Scrubba washbag and we’ve both swapped our wardrobes from winter to summer ☀️.

We’ve sat on the waters edge for a bit, had a lovely lunch at the bar on the beach and then sat in the sun on the grass. Absolute bliss.

It’s now about 5pm, Gareth and Meg have gone for a kip and I’m in the shade writing this 😁
