St Vito Lo Capo

Sunday 19th April 2026 (rest day!)

San Vito Lo Capo, Sicily

Both of us had a fitful night’s sleep blamed on full tummies and warmer nights.

This morning was sunny and yes, warm . I had made use of the site’s washing machine yesterday and left the washing out overnight. It was drying nicely so no overnight dew occurred which was great.

Before we got ready for the day, Gareth booked an appointment at Lady Pennies hair studio for a quick grade 2 all over. Summer is definitely on its way .

The town centre is 1.5km away, 0.5km is on the road and the rest is along the beach promenade.

Its a lovely beach overlooked by the massive Monte Monaco (mountain) and already a little busy on this gorgeous Sunday morning.

A lovely sight awaited us. There were two dogs on the beach, a golden retriever and a puppy mountain type dog. The retriever was swimming along in the sea barking at the water or fish, we couldn’t tell which, and the puppy was terrorising a family with a little boy who was in ecstasy from the attention. Everyone in their vicinity had big smiles on their faces watching this heart warming scene .

Moving on.

All of the buildings in this little town are low rise, with a maximum of 2 floors and set out in a grid pattern. The town gradually built up around what appears to be a fortress, but is in fact an old church. It was busy this morning with a baptism when we popped our head in.

We stopped for a coffee in one of the cafés near the beach and, goodness knows how, succumbed to pastries!

My goodness, they were delicious – sorry no pics were taken to evidence this so you’ll just have to settle for our word .

One was a lemon cream filled Cannoli (a Sicilian favourite) and the other was a dome shaped pastry – similar to viennese whirl – called a Genovese caldo and filled with ricotta cheese cream. Oh my goodness, sugar spikes were rushing in .

After the obligatory purchase of a fridge magnet from one of the many gift shops we walked back along the beach. It was now much busier and hotter though the pavement test for Meg was cool.

Passing a sandy public garden we noticed a sign and a dog-shaped water fountain – failed on the photo front again sorry. The sign was reiterating the law on abandoning animals, and a warning that the full weight of law would be used against any perpetrators. We then realised that this garden had little houses in amongst the plants and trees for the many cats in and around the garden.

Well done Sicily, let’s hope the threats are followed through.

It was very cool back at the van thanks to the shade from the surrounding pine trees so we made the unusual decision to leave Meg in the van instead of taking her to a hot sandy beach.

The fan was set to kick in if the temperature rose, with all 3 skylights open, a bowl full of water and a deer chew to entertain her, we went to the beach…..on our own!

We hired a couple of sunbeds with a head shade thing attached, such a good idea for €5 each. What a bargain!

Gareths moaney bit: After settling down on the sunbeds, the most irritating thing happened. The highly recognisable sound of a group of Americans who just do not know how to chat quietly . Thankfully they headed off the beach shortly afterwards.

A couple of hours was all we needed, Gareth had a little swim in the sea, I did the toe test and it came back negative, though I was happy to take pics of Parker’s dip .
