Selinunte

Selinunte, Sicily

The Archeological park of Selinunte was just a few minutes drive from last night’s park up.

We tried to park in the main car park but it was so busy and we seemed to have just missed the last spot. Not to worry, a nice security guard said we could park on the access road.

First things first, we stopped for a coffee at the bar opposite the entrance. The temperature was just right for the walk ahead of us.

The entrance fee made us cough a little. €17 each plus €3 for the paper guide! Blimey. At least Meg was permitted and free.

The park is so big you can hire bikes, get a Wally train or a golf buggy ride! Blimey again!.

Our arrival coincided with the majority of Sicilian school children on a school trip. Off they piled from their coaches grouped by different coloured caps. Looking after them all was not a job I envied, that’s for sure.

Exiting the reception area you are almost in front of the first temple. They are alphabetically recorded in the guide as they don’t really know what each one was originally. There is a free audio guide accessed by QR codes at each temple if you wanted it. We did not as Parker was doing a grand job of reading the blurb from the paper guide 😀.

The main temple (Temple E) is mahoosive and has been partly reconstructed. You are also allowed to wander through it. From this temple you can see the ancient city in the distance, it’s on a promontory, easily visible from the partly-reconstructed Acropolis.

It looked quite far away AND we had to lose height to get there 😁 but it made for a rather pleasant walk in the end. Paths lead you around the remains of other temples and then down through pretty gardens of exotic plants and wildflowers.

Before we knew it, we had arrived. This place is so big that even with the contents of the Island’s primary schools scooting about everywhere, you actually had a lot of space.

As always, we were surprised at the small size of the rooms these ancient people lived in. From whats left to view, some are so tiny they could just be bedrooms.

Small rooms (ruins of)

We stopped for a drink and a gelato at a cafe on the cliff before heading back to the entrance.

Gelato stop with a view!

It would have been better had more of the buildings been reconstructed but you can see what a job they have on their hands. The footings for some of the pillars alone are gigantic!

Certainly a lot more to see than on some sites. All in all we had a good visit.

We didn’t really have a next destination so popped a parkup in the satnav and set off. Whilst checking the parkup on the P4N app, I spied a different one, by a small beach with the owners running the beachside restaurant. So coordinates were changed and a new destination was picked.

We arrived late afternoon at Boomerang Camping in Contrada Cipollazzo, Menfi.

It’s in the middle of nowhere, down a single track for the last bit but a lovely, down to earth private Sosta with everything you need and an excellent restaurant.

There were 2 other vans when we arrived with 3 more turning up later. The owner came up from the restaurant to introduce himself and we asked for a table for dinner at 7. He explained that he had a couple of different fish available and also mussels.

Yum, yum. We had a scrummy bottle of red wine from Erice on the island, a bowl of mussels to share with curly fried potatoes dusted in paprika and then our fish. Really sorry, can’t remember the names but they were delicious, not too many bones and loads of juicy flesh. Mine was some sort of Sea Bream (“Orata” in Italian) whilst Parker’s was more like a sea bass (“Spigola” in Italian).

There was soo much we took some home for Meg – a couple of street cats got some of it – but she doesn’t need to know that 😃.

Beach Day

This morning we had a lazy start, nowhere but the beach to go 😀, so after Gareth had done some of that work stuff, we wandered down to the beach with our chairs. Parking our stuff, we took Meg for a wander along the gorgeous, sandy beach.

Hardly anyone else on it, just lovely.

Back at the restaurant we ordered salad and chicken. We keep forgetting we are in italy and they do courses a little different here.

Our salad came as a plate each and then our chicken. We had no idea how the chicken was going to be prepared as Marie, the female half of the team speaks Italian and German but hardly any english. We quite liked the mystery of it 😃.

As it turns out it was a half of grilled chicken each and yes, you guessed it, delicious.

Quite a lot was packed away for Meg’s tea which she has just chomped down enthusiastically 😃.

There’s another UK couple onsite and whilst chatting with them at the beach it turns out she’s never tried a Limoncello Spritz. I told her that I would put that right tonight. Another convert incoming me thinks 😂

Footnote: after a couple of yellow cards for Parker, I have reloaded the FB app so that I can share these posts myself with you as before. If you ask me those yellow cards were a cunning plan on the part of Parker 🤔 and I fell for it 😂
