Day 16, 2nd May 2024.
Sirmione, Lake Garda to Cavallina, Tuscany.
Well, not much to report today. We were up bright and early, not just to get to the menders but also eager to beat the daily queue for the camper services spot at the top of the campsite.
Each time we’ve walked by there’s been a trail of motorhomes, filling and emptying before exiting the site.
Anyway, mission accomplished, we said a fond arrivederci to Andrew and Jane and Marley dog. It’s been a different holiday with those guys around and we’ve loved it.
Gareth took it easy for the 15min or so drive to the caravan shop. The last thing we needed was the wind whipping under the open skylight and ripping it off
. We arrived in one piece ![]()
and then set about explaining our issue. There wasn’t the expected language barrier as one of the chaps in the shop spoke great English and translated for us, we had Google translate on hand if needed too
.
After an inspection of the skylight, we were advised we’d need a new one. We were happy to order one, but as we were going to Sicily, we asked if we could come back this way for them to fit it, and, in the meantime we needed it to close in case of rain and wind.
The shop owner told us that this type of skylight was ok to be left open when driving along, but he could put tape around it to secure it and prevent rain getting in. Yes please we said.

Well, after an hour’s labouring and wrestling with it, up and down the ladder, backwards and forwards for more tools (some of which made us worry
) this lovely old Italian man got it closed ![]()
. We think
he said he had fixed it but we’re going to treat it very gingerly in future, just in case.
Now we were free to zoom off down the motorway, but not before a shopping stop in the Aldi next door.
Even though the motorway was a toll road, the surface was like those in the UK. We seem to remember that it just gets slowly worse the further down the boot we go.
We could see mountains in the distance and before long we were travelling through them. I forgot to count how many tunnels we did today, but there were quite a few. It was a mixture of rain and sunshine all the way to Tuscany and into Cavallina.
How funny, we pulled up outside the Sosta (motorhome parking area in Italy) and realised we’d been here before
.
During a gap in the rain, I took Meg for a walk by the lake just outside the Sosta. There was a lot of groundwater everywhere, so I think they’ve had more than just today’s rain.
Meg had a fab run off of the lead, rolling in something dead on the footpath
and having a couple of zoomies before we hurried back to the van because of the rain.
Only a couple of pics for you today.
