Pozzallo

Day 43. Wednesday 29th May 2024.

Noto to Pozzallo, Sicily.

Looking at the weather forecast this morning, we decided that it was going to be too hot to take Meg around a town for sight-seeing, so we chose a spot on the beach in a small town called Pozzallo.

Once again we had fun and games exiting Noto, eventually getting back on the Autostrade and heading for Pozzallo. There are lots of places to pick but not all of them have direct access to a nice beach, and I’m afraid we seem to be becoming a little spoilt.

Another little hiccup on our route was the presence of an unmarked bridge tunnel for the railway. It wasn’t long, it was high (normally they are too low), the problem was it was very narrow 😬. I had to get out and help Gareth squuuuuueeeeeze the van through 😲no joking, we had about an inch either side of the wing mirrors, which do not, unfortunately retract. A car behind us stopped with a big gap, I reckon he was thinking we were going to have to turn around.

Gareth was hanging his phone out the window trying to get me to take a photo but I was more concerned about holding the other cars up 😅, well done Parker, with just a little help from Lady Penelope we did it 😂.

Arriving at the campsite we couldn’t decide where the actual entrance was. Going around a few roundabouts a few times, the entrance finally revealed itself to us. With a longer van there was a moment of grounding out but other than that we were on site called The Garden of Epicurus ☺️

This site is right next to the road which is elevated so you don’t hear a lot of the noise, there are a few spots with shade and we picked a great one.

The van has been cool all day though it’s been very warm in the sun. There’s a strong breeze off of the beach which keeps you cool.

After some lunch we walked along the road into the town centre, looking for an ATM. It’s a very tidy little town with a great beach. Hardly any litter around, which makes a change for a small place.

The centre of town was busy even though it was siesta time and after getting some cash, we stopped for a drink at a restaurant on the waters edge.

Pozzallo is also a port. Ferries take foot passengers and vehicles to Malta from here. You can also do a day trip on a hydrofoil, takes about an hour each way 😀.

One building of note was the 15th century defence tower on the beach – Cabrera Tower – built to defend warehouses in the town from Pirate attacks. Looks like it’s being renovated at the moment.

We chose to walk back along the beach giving Meg a good run. I finally found her ball so she was able to run off some energy. She wasn’t keen on the kites of the kite surfers but didn’t cause too much of a fuss. There’s surfing schools all down this coast , the onshore breeze being ideal for those activities.

The afternoon was spent lazing on the beach trying not to fall into one of Meg’s trenches 😀
