Dubrovnik via Ston

Day 20

14 th April

Split to Dubrovnik via Ston.

We had a thunderstorm overnight with lots of rain.

As soon as the thunder and lightning started, we picked Meg up and put her on our bed. One of our old dogs was a nightmare during storms so we nipped any reaction in the bud by getting her close to us. To be honest, we think she was rather annoyed that we had woken her up! As it was, she slept through it so no crisis arose.

The journey to Dubrovnik was quite a long one so our plan was to just take our time and enjoy the drive.

Using the motorway as the forecast was not good, we drove through some very arid, rocky regions with some amazing signs warning of Wolves, Bears and Wild Boar! Blimey, just a warning if ever you get stuck here .

In case you’re not aware, Croatia is split for a bit by Bosnia Herzegovina. The Croatians have now built a bridge which takes you onto a Croatian outcrop so that you don’t have to cross borders. We used this bridge to get to Dubrovnik.

The new link road isn’t finished yet so we had to go through a village called Ston.

We were very surprised as we approached to see what can only be described as a ‘great wall of China’! Blimey, totally unexpected and so we had to stop. The wall is amazing, can still be climbed – if you’re not fainthearted – and was built to defend the town and it’s salt pans (flats). There’s a little fort too.

Driving on towards our campsite, we caught a glimpse of the red roof tops of Dubrovnik old town and then we passed the cruise terminal and what was in dock but The World!

A couple of my previous employments involved cruise ships and this is one I thought I would never see. What a treat.

Explaining it to Gareth I googled how much it would be for a ticket, $66,000! What’s different about this ship is that people live on it full time. And every day, the captain asks his passengers where they would like to go next! Gareth and I thought it a bad idea, as living full time fully inclusive would not be good for our already suffering waistlines.
