Mycenae

Day 41

Gythio Lakonias to Kantias, Nafplio via Mycenae (Mykines).

Day 41 saw us heading for the ancient site of Mycenae. There were two sites next door to each other to visit.

One is an amazing tomb with a conical roof. As it was robbed before it was properly discovered no artifacts were left for clues to its use, but the powers that be think it was either a treasury or a kings tomb, it actually could have been where Argamemnon was laid to rest. It was very impressive.

We then walked up the hill to the site of Ancient Mycenae. It’s in a great spot.

Built on a hilltop with views all the way to the sea. It’s hard to imagine any enemy getting close enough to attack without being seen. The info boards are great in giving you an idea of the buildings they have uncovered and sometimes what they were used for.

What would really be great is either a diagram of what they think it looked like or even a hologram ☺️, amazing really that these buildings were here 12 to 13 thousand years BC!

As we had moved north the weather had changed so we donned long trousers and raincoats to wander the sites, and glad were we, it was very blustery and getting wet as we returned to the van.

Our day finished by setting up at a campsite in Kantias, a little further south.

The entrance to this campsite is very hairy scary. A steep concrete twisty road made us regret entering, but once we were down, we thought, bugger it, we’re here now🥴 as we squeezed our big van into the tight spot.

Hoping to see some sun tomorrow, but first I plan to walk with Meg to the nearest grocery store to buy bits for our coronation celebration, who knows what I’ll come back with 🤣.

Enjoy the coronation or whatever else you are doing over the weekend ☺️👍yamas 🍻
