Nea Makri and fridge repairs

Day 47

Nea Makri to Laurium via The Camper Club, Athens.

Up early, I took Meg for a walk to the beach. It was only 5 mins away and on a sunny day would be lovely. Today was windy and overcast but still warm.

We had the usual initially aggressive dogs running up to us. For some strange reason Meg always wants to play with them? I stamped my foot, shushed them which stopped the barking and they walked away.

This beach is at the bottom of little residential roads so not on the tourist path though there are bars and restaurants as you’d expect ☺️.

Looking back to our first day in Croatia we had a mishap. We didn’t lock the fridge door and after A LOT of windy roads, the fridge door flew open, couldn’t support the weight of goods in the door and broke at the bottom hinge. We managed to pop it back on but there was nothing to keep it in place.

Since then we have supported the lock with big bottles of water in a bucket, jamming it closed really. We did contact a company in Croatia but due to spam issues they didn’t get back to us until we had left and entered Montenegro.

The guys were great though and recommended a Hymer dealer in Athens. That was our stop today.

The Camperclub (Greece) hires out motorhomes for holidaying in Greece. All different kinds and sizes and it was their service dept we visited.

The clever young man had the door repaired in no time while Meg played with the biggest, softest dog we’ve seen so far. She looked so small next to him and it was so nice for her to run around with another dog who wasn’t barking at her!

To get to the service dept on Athens outskirts we drove on the ancient marathon race road where every km is counted. ☺️ The story goes that at the end of the battle of Marathon a runner was sent to Athens to alert them that the Persians were coming. So cometh the Marathon race. Didn’t expect to see that!

The service guy was only young and he was asking us about our trip, why we had a left hand drive and said for any other problems to give him a call. How sweet. Just need to point out that so far every Greek person we have met has been unfailingly lovely and friendly.

Not wanting to go back to last night’s camping site we have plumbed for another of the 3 available! It’s down at the southern tip in Laurium, just down the road from Sounias and a temple of Athena which we hope to visit tomorrow.

This camping site is much like last night’s, and we are getting used to the fact that most pitches have well established caravan homes with an array of awnings, fences and foliage to make it ‘home’. Leaving just a few spots for the likes of us needing somewhere to stop for the night.

To be honest I’m not sure that these places are out of the ‘covid’ wars yet. They certainly look unloved and a bit abandoned. Having said that, maybe in the searing summer heat you’d be glad to go into one of these dark, shaded caravans for some respite.

There is a beach here too, and like the previous one, a few minutes walk from the site. This one is secluded, sandy and very windy. There were cars parked with what looked like windsurfing gear in, though I didn’t spot any on the water. Maybe we’ll see some tomorrow.
