Lavrio

Day 48

Lavrio (Laurium)

We walked to the port of Lavrio, which took us about an hour via the main coast road.

The first thing we saw was a ship loaded with wind turbine blades, and then saw a huge stack of them on the quayside. Not sure if they are made here or the ship had dropped some off.

This area was well known for their silver and lead mines , one of which we saw on our way into town. All abandoned now.

We seemed to have arrived at ‘schools out’ time. The harbour was awash with school children, all having a jolly good afternoon.

There is a very cosmopolitan high street with a park and fountains in the middle. The main industry here seems to be yacht hire/charter. There were a lot moored in the harbour and a lot coming and going too. A very busy water way.

We stopped for some refreshments and then, to Gareth’s disappointment, we had to walk back as the taxi’s wouldn’t take Meg 😀. Certainly got our step count up though so all good.

We cut down one of the roads to the beach on the way back and bumped into our neighbours on the little site.

They are from Australia and doing a year in Europe. Being quite canny they have bought a car and caravan and will sell it before they go home.

It was nice chatting to them, they did 3 years travelling around parts of Australia and will most probably do the same when they get home ☺️👍.

This campsite served a purpose but not one we’d return to through choice.
