Day 44
Palaia Epidaurus
This little campsite is fab. It’s a bit dated services wise but it’s what we call an authentic Greek campsite, like an authentic Greek Taverna, few and far between on the well trodden tourist paths now.
Today we took a walk along the beach to what they call the Sunken City of Epidaurus. Its ruins sit just under the water about 50m off the beach. Just further on from this is another ruin called the Small Amphitheatre of Epidaurus.
Gareth got the drone out and took some lovely video of both sites
. The sunken city is more like a hamlet or residence. It is said that the owner, his family, servants and workers lived on the property with the associated buildings. Just love that we caught a family paddle boarding by it so that you get some perspective as to its size.
We then walked to the small theatre which is closed due to ongoing excavations but you can walk around the perimeter fence and get a very good view.

There is still lots going on at this site, evidenced by the grey roofing protection. As we walked down the path past the site towards the harbour we thought how amazing it is that under all these orange and olive groves could be similar archaeology
.
Maybe we’ll come back in 10 years to see how they have progressed.
The harbour is tiny, but there were a few chartered yachts in and plenty of restaurants and cafes to sit in. We chose one on the waters edge where we could watch the fish eating the bread thrown in for them.
We had some of those fish
, with a plate of beans and a Greek salad. It was delicious
and we got free orange cake before we left
. The walk seemed longer on the way back, not helped by a bellyful of carbs and beer
.

Camped in front of us is a German couple with a gorgeous golden retriever called Lucky. He is so funny, he goes fishing! Wading up and down in the shallow water chasing the small sprats, his look of concentration is magical. His owner told us that last week he caught an octopus here
, I thought they may have rescued it from him but it died, so the campsite boss prepared it for them and they ate it
. Lucky swims out a long way with his owner, too far for my little heart to cope with
worrying he was gonna drown!

Meg doesn’t like it on the campsite, there are huge ants everywhere, and although we put the mat and her bed out she doesn’t like them anywhere near her – Gareth blames me as I’m such a squinny when it comes to stuff crawling on me – but she does love the beach, so that’s where she has spent most of her outdoor time here.
