Day 43
Kantias, Nafplio to Palaia Epidavros via the Ancient Theatre at the Asclepieion of Epidaurus.
Do you remember me saying that the access road for the campsite was hairy?
Well today was the reverse. We had to get our 4.5t front wheel drive van up and around the shiny concrete road. Managing to actually get out of the pitch was a feat in itself!
I know for sure that Gareth was the right man for the job, as although we had a couple of wheels spins, we were up and out of there with just a few little squeaks from me. We’ve made a conscious decision not to enter if we see dodgy access roads like this again!
Anyway, successfully exited we headed to today’s attraction, The Ancient Theatre at the Asclepieion of Epidaurus.
It’s a stunning place, just the theatre alone is worth the trip. I’ve included the info board for more details if you want it.

While we were there some guides were demonstrating the acoustics, amazing how we could hear a coin drop whilst sitting on the last row at the top.

There are loads of other ruins on this site, one of which is the Stadium. It doesn’t look much but the running track was uncovered and some of the seating on either side.
Today on our approach there was a road race (something similar to a long park run or Race for Life) in progress.
During our meander we came across the Stadium which was being used for the young children’s race. How brilliant is it that they still use it today. Spectators were sat on the same seating used all those years ago!

This site was really worth the €12 entrance fee.
Getting back to the van we have come to a campsite on the beach again, this time in Palaia Epidavros. Camping Lefka.
From the beach you can see what they call the Small theatre of Epidaurus And the underwater city of Epidaurus! This will be our walk tomorrow, hopefully Gareth will get some drone footage of the sunken city. Apparently it’s only approx 2m under the surface.
We had a nice traditional meal in the little taverna on the site and poor Gareth had to take one for them team with the post-meal Ouzo shots!
We now trying to stay awake for the coronation concert – though, as we are two hours ahead of the UK I’m not sure we’ll last the distance
.
