Tollare, Corsica

Saturday 10th May

Bastia to Tollare, Corsica

Meg had a run on the beach this morning, though she had to stay on her lead as she has taken to eating all the flotsum and jetsum, the little so and so. I’m sure its all organic but don’t want to take a chance of her being ill.

We packed up and left the lovely campsite, stopping at the shop for some supplies and a new camping table 😄, as you do.

We were heading for the very northern tip of the island and so had to drive back through the town of Bastia.

The roads are very narrow and there are lots of low road tunnels we had to avoid, meaning we had to concentrate! 😃

Once we were through the town the road twisted and turned around the coastline.

Parker pulled over a few times to let the locals pass, much better than towing them 😀, that’s for sure. The scenery was beautiful. A mix of green slate and lush vegetation, with the bluest of blue seas. Wow!

Most of the car parks along the route have height barriers and signs banning motorhomes from stopping, so we didn’t get a chance to stop for a coffee along the way.

The road we had to take actually crosses the island but we needed a turn off in the middle. As it was we drove past it because it was literally a hairpin bend, and to add to the confusion a bunch of motorbikers had stopped to check their own directions.

After checking the map, Parker did a 3-point turn, beeped the bikes to let them know we wanted to go that way, and took what can only be described as an off-road route. It was a bumpy, uneven single lane that wound down through forests and up into the hills before chucking us out at Tollare 😃.

It was worth the journey. The view is amazing, the aire we have stopped in hasn’t been completed yet, but we are allowed to stay, for free, with free services.

It’s above the fishing village and only a 5 minute walk down. Right on the front there is a little cafe/restaurant serving traditional Corsican food and along the little beach there is also a bar.

We stopped in the restaurant, sitting under the trees on the waterside terrace, had a couple of beers in the sun and then had the local specialities of pickled fish, local goats cheese, creamed artichokes and mashed olives.

It was delicious and just right for our setting 🥰.

Meg had a run off lead on the beach and then we walked back up to the van to sit in the sun.

After dinner I walked back down with Meg and wandered around to the little harbour and village centre.

It was very quaint, and looks like attention is now being paid to some of the dilapidated buildings. It’s quietly pretty now, so who knows how lovely it will look when they’ve all been done.

The sun has now set and it’s getting damp so we have moved inside for the night.

Happy Saturday night everyone.
