Olbia ferry to mainland

Saturday 14th to Monday 16th June

San Teodoro, Sardinia to Civitavecchia, Italy (mainland).

No sightseeing was achieved during our last couple of days on Sardinia. We just vegged out under the shade all day (in between Meg walks) and then spent a couple of hours on the beach as the heat from the day started to dissipate from about 4pm.

It was glorious. I’ve put together a couple of videos showing the sunrise, viewed from the back of the van 🥰 and the sea after sunset, if it wasn’t for the island that comes into view at the end you wouldn’t know where the horizon was. (one below)

So quiet on the beach in San Teodoro

And so Monday came around and we were finally leaving the islands for the mainland.

We’ve been on Sardinia for 3 weeks and were on Corsica for 2 weeks.

Both periods, we feel, were enough and one thing we would definitely change is the time of year to visit. It was too hot for all 3 of us in the end, so we didn’t get to visit a couple of places that we would have liked to.

The islands are very different, Corsica’s roads are narrow, twisty and hilly but had more places to visit. Sardinia is more chilled, nicer beaches, less mountains and fewer attractions.

Our ferry today was booked with Grimaldi lines from Olbia in the north east of Sardinina across the Tyrrhenian Sea to Civitavecchia, mainland Italy.

Of all the island hopping we have done over the past couple of years, this was our first trip with Grimaldi and it’s fair to say, our best experience to date.

Boarding was less stressful, the cabin was really nice, the all-important dog toilet area had a thumbs up from Meg and, they filled the swimming pool for those that wanted to use it for a couple of hours.

We would definitely recommend Grimaldi if available on any trip you are thinking of taking.

The ferry trip took about 6 1/2 hours and we managed a picnic lunch, a kip and showers in that time.

Meg was very relaxed when on deck as the outdoor seating area by the pool bar had fake grass, so much nicer for her to lay on than hot metal which isn’t the usual deck material.

In case you’re wondering, we often use her poo bags as a ready-made drinking bowl!

Then, before we knew it we were off the ferry and back on terra firma.

We had chosen a Sosta about an hour or so away from our landing port of Civitavecchia in a place called Saturnia. Tell you more about that tomorrow.
