Ferry home via Guingamp and Roscoff

Day 26 & 27 , 31st Oct & 1st Nov

Guingamp and Roscoff, France

Yesterday’s drive was the longest we have done so far, just under 5 hours including a couple of stops.

We picked a small town – Guingamp – that left us an hour or so’s drive to Roscoff the next day.

There aren’t any serviced Aires in Guingamp so we chose a parking area permitted for camping cars. It was just off the town centre and, once again, by a river.

When we arrived we were the only van. There were a lots of cars, mainly locals walking their dogs, but still lots of space for us.

Once we had set up, we wandered off to the town, literally across the road, across the walking bridge and up an ancient stepped lane into the main square.

Just to say, the river has those coloured bars hanging down, with a few rapids indicating its a popular kayaking place. There wasn’t any activity on the water while we were there.

Walking into the square we passed the fountain which feeds a fanned waterfall in the pavement. You definitely need to watch where you are walking.

There are some lovely medieval buildings still in use and a pretty Basilica at the top of the road.

What was lovely was seeing all the local children dressed for Halloween, popping into all the shops to collect treats. We were pleasantly surprised, as we really hadn’t thought that shops take part in the tradition.

Some shops had to post notices on their doors that they had run out of treats, though the children didn’t seem too disappointed. It was also heartwarming to see so many parents dressed up too. They all had big smiles on the faces as we said good evening to them.

Another unexpected surprise was seeing a huge metal Bambi sculpture, tucked just off the main square in the Place de la Republique. We have to say, it was quite refreshing to the normal twist of metal or stone we see, stretching your imagination trying to figure out what it’s supposed to represent 🤔. Photo at top of page.

All of a sudden we heard firecrackers being let off. Meg freaked, luckily she’s on a leash otherwise she would have bolted. As it was she pulled Gareth’s arm from his socket.

That really ended our little tour. She was not in the mood to sit outside a cafe, so after purchasing some pastries 🫣, we headed back to the van.

There was only one firework display so nothing that she couldn’t handle tucked up in the van, thank goodness.

This morning we headed for Roscoff and our ferry home. It was windy and rained sporadically but not as much as we were expecting.

Arriving in Roscoff we parked in the old railway station car park and headed into the centre – which is on the waterfront 😁, looking for our last holiday meal.

Last time we were in Roscoff the bars and cafés were so busy we had to have chips from a van! This time we were successful. The waitress told us to sit inside with the dog as it would be warmer – sweet.

I had the moules and frites, Gareth had the fish and chips. Obviously we shared. Both meals were perfect. We washed that down with a local cider and beer.

Roscoff is really a pretty little place, even in the showers.

We have now pitched up at a camping carparks Aire on the other side of Roscoff. Still only a 10 minute drive to the ferry in the morning.

We were in time to catch the last of the sun before it dropped and lit up the sky in a beautiful red hue.

Well, thats it. Another little trip has come to an end. We have really enjoyed our little soiree into Brittany, France and our holiday within a holiday to Spain 😁.

Fingers crossed for a calm….ish sail home tomorrow.

Happy Saturday night everyone.

Bonne soirée and Au Revoir.
