Vannes

GK Tours Day 3

Wednesday 6th November

Dinan to Vannes

We had a a really good sleep. Honestly, this van is like a cave. It doesn’t let the light in and I, unusually was woken up by my 8am vitamin reminder 😃.

So, consequently, there was no time for a nice walk for me and Meg. We had a quick breakfast and set out for Vannes in the South East of Brittany on the Gulf of Morhiban, another new destination for all of us.

It was misty again today, more like fog in our opinion, but the weather app has it as mist and who are we to argue?

Our route was through the countryside and was a very pleasant ride. We were reminded of home when we queued with a number of other vehicles behind a slow moving tractor 😁. But, we had no important agenda so just enjoyed the scenery. Fields here don’t have high hedges so you can see everything that’s going on, today it was just ploughing.

We had decided to park near the old town of Vannes in a big car park used by university students. We did secure a parking spot but as it was very busy, we erred on the side of caution and drove on to the nearest Camping Car Park Aire. It’s on the Riviere du Vincin and next to a seasonal campsite.

The walk back into Vannes was @ 50 mins/ 3.4km, most of which was along another river which ran into Vannes. A very pleasant walk as there are separate cycle and pedestrian lanes and lots of well kept grassed areas, though Meg was more interested in what was lurking on the banks 🥴.

A strange thing happened as we approached the town, we could just see the cathedrals spires rising above the rooftops, when the sun must have broke through the mist and all 3 spires glowed a bright gold. Blimey, did they know we were coming? 😁.

Vannes has a wally train if you don’t want to walk around but as always, we like to get a few steps under our belt and carried on on foot.

There are some beautiful buildings here, I think my favourite has to be the Town Hall (has scaffolding around the front terrace), typical French architecture at its finest.

Vannes Town Hall

The centre of town has it’s mix of medieval and modern houses and shops, every corner turned is a photo opportunity. Some of the old buildings are so warped – gosh, I wish they’d let us see inside them!

A lot of the businesses are, yes, you guessed it, cafes and patisseries and yes, we couldn’t resist!

We chose an apple crumble slice and an almond slice, a Breton favourite by all accounts, we think it was puff pastry layered into rounds with lashings of butter and sugar – caramelised on the outside. Oh my goodness, incredibly bad for us but oh sooo nice 😋.

Vannes seems chilled and quirky, maybe that’s the student influence, noone seemed to be rushing anywhere.

It was difficult to get a good picture of the cathedral as it’s slap bang in the middle of all the medieval buildings. It felt quite serene stood amongst it all, and, for once I was going to pop in to the cathedral but there was a mass in progress so no visiting was allowed.

Vannes Cathedral

On our way back we stopped along the quay for a drink where Meg received a lot of attention from the staff. We also watched some people playing Petanque in the park. Such a lovely setting and well used by the locals.

We took a different path once we were out of the park and followed the river back to the Aire, Meg had a good run off lead and, thankfully didn’t go into the water/sludge.

Tonight we tried our little airfryer to heat up a couple of Cordon Bleu’s in the van and it was a success, we are very happy campers….little wins 😁
