Friday 8th May and Saturday 9th May 2026. Ostuni a Mare and Brindisi, Puglia, Italy
Friday 8th May
We woke to a very windy and wet Polignano a Mare. Thank goodness we had decided to visit last evening.
Sadly, groups of visitors were piling off their coaches with their raincoats already on. Some were attempting to use umbrellas but to no avail.
The weather dictated our day and we decided to go to a camper stop on the coast of Ostuni (we’d visited Ostuni itslef on a previous trip) and hunker down for the day.
It wasn’t far away, so we were there and set up in no time. The little stop is just for campers and has great facilities. It’s the first time we have seen 3 grey emptying areas! Blimey.
The other nice gesture was a free bottle of their own wine. We haven’t tried it yet but really appreciated their kindness. The normal EHU supply is 2amp – not sure exactly what that would power 
so we upgraded to 4amp for an extra €2. The total for the one night stay including wine was €19! Bargain.
I took Meg for a walk to the local harbour during a break in the weather, it was still closed for the season though would have looked better with the sun shining I’m sure.
Saturday 9th May
The weather was back to sunny skies and light breezes as we made our way to Brindisi. Another port city that we weren’t expecting too much from.
How wrong can you be? There’s a huge free car park near the port for all vehicles. Initially it looked busy with campers but on reflection we think most of them are parked long-term by local residents rather than visitors.
Walking up into the old town we just wandered. There is a lot of Baroque architecture here with some really pretty buildings. Cobbled and flagstone lanes lead you around the little piazzas, some with cafes and shops.
Brindisi was smarter than we expected, unassuming and proud.
Down on the waterfront there were a couple of superyachts moored opposite chic restaurants and bars. Looking for somewhere for lunch, we spotted a smart eatery up some steps just off of the main drag. Perfect.
To be honest, it was the best value lunch we have had so far.
We ordered baby squid, grilled vegetables, bombettes (slices of meat rolled, stuffed with cheese and grilled) with fried potatoes and fresh swordfish – finally Gareth got his wish 
.
To wash it down, I had 1/2ltr of fizzy wine – €4! How could I resist – and Parker had water, cos obviously he has to drive 
. The bill came to €54. Wow, not only was the food good but the staff were spot on too.
There were a few diners around us we suspected were travelling on the superyachts, very chic and understated in their manner and dress 
.
There’s an unusual church in Brindisi, built as a replica of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, marking the relationship between Brindisi and the Holy Land at the time. Some of the frescoes are still recognisable! From the 1100’s!
Brindisi was also a very important trade route, marked by 2 roman columns, one of which still stands proudly near the port.
Time to say goodbye to Brindisi and on to our next stop
