Segovia, Castilla y León, Spain
Our stop today was Segovia, another place on Gareth’s wishlist.
Another free parking area by another Plaza de Toris (Bull Ring) just on the outskirts of town. This parking area is actually just by the amazing Roman Aquaduct where it emerges from underground and grows substantially as you follow it into town.
What a feat of engineering! It’s still standing today, made of granite stone – no cement was used in the making.
It’s just fantastic. It turns a corner to enter the town and grows to almost 100ft tall 
. Astonishingly, it was still being used up until 1973!
It was spectacular with the sun shining through it’s arches, casting enormous shadows onto the square and visitors below.
Overall it’s 17km in length, starting in the mountains and ending at the Alcazar (Castle).
Losing height to get down to the square, we gazed through the arches to view the tower of the Cathedral 
.
From the square you can walk through the town or mount the impressive staircase taking you up to the old walls.
We opted to walk through the streets, once again using the GPSmyCity app to show us the highlights.
It was very busy for a cold Sunday afternoon but we shuffled along with fellow tourists, finding beautiful buildings and squares.
The Cathedral, as you can imagine is huge, lions posing as protectors around the perimeter and all of the pinnacles had these lovely little bobble bits on them – sorry for that description – Gareth’s going to study some books to help me get the terms right 
.
The detail is just amazing.
As if the Cathedral wasn’t enough, we wandered down to the Alcazar/Castle. It is said that this castle inspired the Walt Disney fairytale castle. Whether it did or not, you can see where the thought came from.
The castle is just beautiful, and has been lovingly restored and cared for. We’re told that it’s fantastic on the inside too but, once again, dogs weren’t permitted, not even into the forecourt area.
We couldn’t see where the Aquaduct came out at the castle, peering over the old walls didn’t reveal it’s whereabouts but the views are far reaching.
All in all, we were very impressed with Segovia, it’s very tidy and interesting.
A couple of things to note, we bought some Torrezno – the huge pork cracklings and a slice of Horzano, which we hadn’t had since our trip to Salamanca a couple of years ago. Both were delicious, even Meg gave her approval 
.
Stopping outside a Tabacos in the old lanes I noticed big tins of Quality Street on sale – you know, the original sized tins – but we were gobsmacked at the price – €49
