Day 36
Poros, Kefalonia to Palouki, Peloponnese.
On the port with us were another British couple in another Hymer
. They are returning to the UK after their regular 3 month stay on Kefalonia. I think this is their 8th year! David came out to talk to us as he couldn’t believe he had, on his last day, seen another UK number plate, we do get everywhere
.
David and Amy (#hecateoddysey) are booked on the 7am sailing. This ferry arrived in Poros Harbour at 11pm last night. We didn’t realise it would stop here overnight and so we prepared ourselves for a night of engine running. To be honest it wasn’t that bad and overall we had a good kip.
There is rain on the way in this part of Greece but luckily for me and Meg the sea was flat
. I put my seabands on, just in case it got choppy and we settled onboard (after the same free for all boarding process as on our way out
).

Just after leaving Kefalonia someone near us pointed and we heard ‘dolphins’!! Wow, yes, finally we have seen them on this trip. Just a couple playing in the wash behind the boat. Gareth watched them through the binoculars and I tried to video, sadly they aren’t as visible on there as they were with the naked eye
. Such a special treat
.

This sighting got us chatting with a guy from the Netherlands who is out in his 4WD camper van for 3 years. Some of it he will do with a caravan as well but his van allows him to get to some of the more remote locations. It was great listening to him, telling him about where we had been and discussing the why’s and why’ nots of having a rescue dog along for the ride. I think Meg may have swayed his decision a little
.
Disembarking into Kyllini (mainland) we drove for about 45 mins to a campsite in Palouki. It’s a small place but has 3 campsites in a row along the beach. The signs to all of them are on the approach road and you feel a little under pressure on which to choose.
We chose based on reviews and weren’t disappointed. (Camping Palouki).
It’s a little old facilities wise but has everything you need. The beach is perfect for Meg and there are beautiful mature trees with well groomed young ones bordering the pitches.

There is also a river running to the sea on one side. Sitting outside the van we were treated to a (I wanted to write cacophony but when I checked it didn’t give the right message so came up with this!) tumult of sound from nature. We both commented that it was like being in the jungle
. I was surprised that there isn’t more of a mosquito problem here, but maybe that will come when it gets warmer.
We went for a meal in the tired little restaurant, the food was ok but the village wine was lovely
, only €3.50 for 1/2 ltr too.
