Monday 12th May
Saint-Florent,Corsica
We had a cooked breakfast this morn. I defrosted some bacon bought from home and served it, cooked
, with asparagus, scrambled egg and a fried tomato. Yum yum.
The forecast was for rain so we packed a couple of brollies and headed into Saint-Florent. The comments from the campsite users indicated a 25 minute walk but its much quicker than that.
As a bonus, we were able to walk some of it along the beach so Meg had a lovely off-lead session.
We came into the town by the marina where it started to get busy. There’s a square with a lovely pink marble war memorial surrounded by bars, restaurants and shops.
We stopped for a coffee before wandering the port roads.
Its not a big place and before you know it you are at the top in the Citadel. There’s a strange round building in the middle which we think was a church. It’s all locked up now and only the citadel walls remain.
There are no info boards to let you know what’s what, always sad I think that a town doesn’t make the most of their past.
Anyway, as expected, the views are amazing from the top, reached by cobbled lanes with twee little artist and handmade goods shops.
The rain was on it’s way and the shops were bringing their wares indoors as we made our way back down. Just as the heavens opened, we dived into a bar and grabbed a seat on the covered terrace. Lucky we did cos within minutes people were being turned away.
Deciding to wait out the now heavy rain we ordered drinks. I had an aperitif I’d read about, a white Cap Corse Mattei over ice ( red is also available) – its a corsican speciality and Gareth – holding my nose as i say it – ordered a Pastis
. Just another word for pernod and just as
.
The rain wasn’t clearing so we ordered another round and got talking to a lady – Enid – from Yorkshire. She sails and was a passenger on the clipper we’d photographed moored out in the bay.

Enid had to leave in the rain to get her launch back to the boat and we ordered lunch.
Panko chicken, calamari, fries and Arancinis. As if that wasn’t enough we then ordered pudding!
Flipping heck, that was delicious. Little bombs of macaroon casing filled with an almond-flavoured cream and topped with caramel sauce. Blood sugar levels went through the roof!
Hopefully the walk back sorted that out
. Washed down with another Cap Corse Mattei we were ready for a kip
.

Luckily it had stopped raining, umbrellas were not deployed and we made it back to the van dry.
Later on we had some bread and jam and a cup of tea
.
