Wednesday 14th May
Calvi to Ota, Corsica
This morning we took things quite leisurely, showered and packed up by 11am and off for another day driving the rollercoaster coastal road to Ota.
The first part of the drive wasn’t too bad. The weather was great and the views amazing.
We stopped a couple of times at roadside pop-up cafés, supporting the local economy by buying a drink or snack. It’s a small price to pay for the setting on offer. It’s also lovely to see how people have made a bar or Café from recycled goods. Cable barrels turned into tables, pallet chairs and sofas, all painted and covered where needed to make them comfortable.

We stopped in one which was reminiscent of a western saloon, a group of french men sat chewing the cud and sipping Pastis, while 3 lovely woofers played in the big yard with sticks.
Oh an opportunity for Meg to make some friends we thought. It was all going really well until she’d had enough of the goosing and then one tried to mount her. They got a quick telling off by her and were shoo’d away.
Another cafe was crafted by the entrance to a mountain hiking trail. This one cleverly sold beer and ice-cream
. We both had ice-cream, Gareth had an orangina and I had a beer. It’s always a giggle when they give me the coffee or soft drink and we have to swap around
.
We made a beeline for a beach where cows frequent. No idea why they do but Gareth had read about them somewhere. And yes, there they were, lounging about in the sand and dried seaweed, not bothered by the other people on the beach.

The second part of today’s journey was sooooo squirly whirly, even Parker had had enough, with still an hour to go. Of course, the satnav calculates your journey on the maximum speed limit!

There was no way we were going to match it. Half the time there was only one lane, around blind bends with rock hanging over and sheer drops inches from the edge.
We did laugh, we did ‘wow’ every now and again at the views and ah’d at the cows and goats we saw along the road. But we were thankful to finally reach our chosen campsite today Camping Sole et Vista Porto Corse.
To be totally honest, we were just on the cusp of fractiousness when we arrived, so a 20 minute set up and sit down was swiftly followed by a walk up to the restaurant (with a wonderful vista), drinks ordered and pizza chosen.

We walked back later to watch the sun set but it had crept just out of view.
Tomorrow we have no choice but to continue on the squirly coast road south.
