GK Tours. Day 37 & 38
Tuesday 10th & Wednesday 11th December 2024.
Javea to Rojales and Torrevieja
We had two stops planned before heading to another campsite for a few days.
Our first was a really nice little Aire just outside Rojalles and Quesada called Area 15, Camper.
We came to this area because Auntie Eileen and Uncle Dave (Andrew’s mum and dad) owned a Finca many years ago. It was just a 10 minute walk from our parking area, so once we were set up we wandered to it.
The latest Google maps view showed the property part demolished so we weren’t expecting much, and, though it was disappointing to see, we weren’t surprised to see it totally flattened with a few mounds of building materials left inside the boundary.
The entrance was still in situ but the property was totally fenced off.
Hopefully it will one day rise like a phoenix from the flames 
.
Sadly the area leading up to the Finca has now built up with industrial units and blocks of apartments.
Walking back towards the Aire we passed a block of apartments with about 3 bars, open with patrons stout in the sun.
Stopping for liquid refreshment we got chatting to the other customers, they all seemed to have migrated from the north of the UK or Russia 
. We only stopped for the one beer, deciding to sit in the sun back at the very pleasant Aire.
Wednesday dawned and so did the rain. Counting our lucky stars we didn’t moan, as this was the first time we’d been trapped inside by the rain so far.
Our next stop was to be Torrevieja but we couldn’t find anywhere close and safe to park for the night for both of us. So plan B was initiated – we cleared the habitation area of our van and readied it for it’s first backseat passengers, and headed off in GK Tours for a visit to Torrevieja.
We passed the roundabout with flamingo statues, reminding us that this is the place to see them, even the lagoons they frequent look pink from a distance. Newly built urbanisations gave way to open land and then another building site until eventually we arrived into Torrevieja.
Eventually, we found parking by the port. It seems there is major reconstruction underway so a lot of the port roads appear to be closed.
Raincoats and umbrella in hand we made our way to a lovely building Andrew and Jane remembered from previous trips. You may know it, it’s the Casino. A mix of art deco and moorish architecture, now a cafe and restaurant with a big covered terrace.
We just had drinks while the rain got into a bit of a tizzy and poured down. When it seemed to have abated a little, we left the beautiful Casino and walked up to Constitution Plaza to see the Christmas tree. It seemed a little sad in the rain, so a quick pic and hasty retreat back to the van was executed.
On our way back we popped in to Quesada, another town now really over-developed. But, we did find chicken and chips for the boys and paella for the girls.
This finished our little trip down memory lane in the Rojales area.
